🚨 Urgent Update for Etsy Sellers Using Savvy Seller: Facebook & Instagram Shops Change the Game on Checkout
The e-commerce landscape is shifting again! We need to address the most recent, major update from Meta (Facebook & Instagram) concerning Shops—a change that affects the core of how you use product tagging.
You may have noticed that Meta is now deprecating "Checkout on Facebook and Instagram." This is a massive reversal of their previous strategy.
The New Reality: Website Checkout is the ONLY Path
Starting in June 2025 and rolling out completely by August/September 2025, Meta is phasing out the native, in-app checkout option. Shoppers who click on a product in your Facebook or Instagram Shop will only be directed to your website to complete the purchase.
While this might sound like a return to the old ways, the technical requirement that is causing a problem for Etsy sellers is the requirement for shops to direct customers to a branded website for purchase completion using a provided checkout URL. This Checkout URL must be capable of receiving product data from Meta to facilitate the order process.
The Core Problem for Etsy Sellers (Still Unresolved)
Etsy does not provide the sophisticated, deep-linking "Checkout URL" that Meta now requires.
- You can link to your generic Etsy shop page.
- You can link to an individual Etsy listing page.
- You cannot provide a single, special URL that Meta can use to add the tagged item from Instagram directly to a shopping cart on your Etsy-hosted domain.
The bottom line: Without a dedicated, compatible e-commerce website, your SavvySeller catalog will no longer be unable to power product tagging and your shop will remain deactivated on Facebook and Instagram.
What Meta Says
The transition to external website checkout is currently underway. This shift returns control over fulfillment, payments, and customer data to the shop owner, but makes a compliant "Website Checkout URL" mandatory for shop features (like product tagging) to work.

Next Steps
While SavvySeller has provided a great catalog syncing product to Etsy sellers for many years, I realize that some changes in the industry are out of our control. I am keeping watch for changes in Etsy and Facebook related to the product tagging and catalogs and also reassessing where SavvySeller can pivot to solve other common Etsy seller frustrations.
